How to choose an practitioner

Here at Inkology, all of our permanent make up artists (PMUs), or Inkologists as we call them, undergo rigorous training and must have at least 200 hours of experience. In addition the must also be registered with our of the professional bodies for PMUs in the United States, and they must undergo regular training to keep them at the top of their game. Unfortunately not all practices follow our strict protocols, so here is a guide of what you should consider to make sure you get great results, in a safe environment.

1. Research and Recommendations

Start your search by gathering recommendations from friends, family, or online communities. Personal referrals can provide valuable insight into the artist’s skills and overall experience. Additionally, read online reviews and testimonials on platforms like Google, Yelp, or social media. Look for artists who have a strong reputation, positive feedback, and a substantial client base.

2. Examine the Artist's Portfolio

A reputable permanent makeup artist will have a portfolio showcasing their previous work. Review before-and-after photos to assess the quality and consistency of their results. Pay close attention to the artistry—lines should be clean, colors should be natural, and the overall appearance should look professionally done. A diverse portfolio demonstrating various styles and techniques can indicate versatility and skill.

3. Check Credentials and Experience

Verify the artist’s qualifications and training. A certified permanent makeup artist should have completed a reputable training program and hold valid certifications in their field. Additionally, ask about their experience; it’s generally advisable to choose an artist who has been practicing for several years. Seasoned professionals are more likely to possess the expertise necessary to achieve desired results.

4. Ask About the Techniques and Equipment Used

Permanent makeup techniques and tools can vary from one artist to another. Ask about the methods they use, such as microblading or machine tattooing, and the types of pigments and equipment they utilize. Ensure that they use high-quality, safe products and follow hygiene practices to minimize the risk of complications.

5. Schedule a Consultation

Most permanent makeup artists offer consultations where you can discuss your expectations, ask questions, and get a feel for their personality and professionalism. During the consultation, observe the artist’s communication style and willingness to address your concerns. This is a crucial step to ensure you feel comfortable with them before undergoing any procedure.

6. Evaluate Cleanliness and Safety Practices

Visiting the artist’s studio or salon is vital in assessing their cleanliness and safety protocols. A professional environment should adhere to strict hygiene standards. Ensure that the artist uses sterile equipment, disposable tools, and proper sanitation methods to reduce the risk of infections or complications.

7. Understand the Pricing Structure

Pricing can vary widely among permanent makeup artists based on their experience, location, and services offered. While budget is a factor, be wary of unusually low prices, as they may indicate a lack of experience or quality. Discuss what the price includes (e.g., consultations, touch-ups, and aftercare) and if there are additional costs down the line.

8. Inquire About Aftercare and Touch-Up Policies

Aftercare is crucial for the longevity and appearance of your permanent makeup. Ask the artist what aftercare procedures they recommend and how long the healing process typically takes. Additionally, inquire about their touch-up policies—many artists include a follow-up session within a certain timeframe to ensure the results meet your expectations.
